Weekly Report: April 22nd - April 28th 2024
The Week in Summary:
- Taylor was battling a chest cold all week and it finally hit me by the weekend. This time they brought it home with them, which is novel, considering I am usually the first to become infected given my proximity to children at my work. Thankfully, we had the Circle, a dreadfully wonderful reality TV show on Netflix to keep our spirits up.
- I watched the Alberta NDP leadership debate on Thursday and it was really revealing about the personalities currently in the race. Whilst I am supporting Naheed Nenshi in this leadership contest, I was really impressed by Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse. I really appreciated her highlighting the emerging water crisis in our region and her sincerity. As for the candidate I was not vibing with, I found Sarah Hoffman to be needlessly aggressive and entitled throughout the debate.
- As for local news, the City of Calgary has been holding public hearings all week regarding the blanket rezoning to R-CG. For myself, this was the first public hearing I participated in via a written statement in support of the blank rezoning policy. Throughout the week, It was interesting to see the local news coverage of the affair, which highlighted the generational gap on the housing issue.
- On Sunday, we picked up a Breville espresso machine (something we have been weighing back and forth for months) from Best Buy and set it up in our kitchen. I am excited to be able to finally make a latte first thing in the morning without having to go to a cafe.
Recommendations:
- Loss of Life by MGMT (Album): A sentimental neo-psychedelic rock album. Strong existential themes running through this album and it absolutely delivers on those big feelings. This album is exactly what I need right now. Personal highlights from the album include songs like: Nothing Changes, Mother Nature, People in the Streets, and Bubblegum Dog.
- Mind the generation gap in Calgary's debate over zoning and townhouses by Jason Markusoff (Article): An analysis detailing the generational differences between supporters and opponents of the blanket rezoning.
- Inside Palestine’s Last Keffiyeh Factory by Katherine Oung (Essay): An essay that explores the intersection between the Palestinian struggle and the keffiyeh. Relevant given the debate in Ontario over the keffiyeh ban in the legislative assembly.
