Weekly Report: April 8th - April 14th 2024
The Week in Summary:
- The highlight of my work week was Monday’s partial solar eclipse and the special programming we got to host at the science centre. I found watching the eclipse to be a sacred communal celebration - so I was very touched by it. Beyond that, it was a fairly standard work week with not much happening.
- On Saturday, Taylor and I went down to Inglewood Bird Sanctuary to join Nature Calgary in a nearly three hour long birdwatching event. I regretted not picking up a latte before, but we had a fantastic time with folks. Based on the e-bird checklist, we saw 28 species, with Northern flickers, American robins, and European starlings making up most of our feathered friends. Adding to that, we had the delight of seeing a coyote, ground squirrels, and an osprey. After birdwatching, we went to Vegan Street for lunch and did some shopping before coming back home to unwind.
- After beating Elden Ring last week, I tried to begin another campaign, but I decided to take a longer break (at least until the expansion comes out in the summer). Instead, I spent the week languishing over what to play next and reading through some books I had put aside whilst playing Elden Ring.
- Unfortunately, as is often the case, I ended up having a flu over the weekend. By Saturday night, I was having a stuffy nose, body aches, and cold chills, with similar symptoms continuing on Sunday. This is the price I pay for working with children.
Recommendations:
- Where Do NYC Cab Drivers Eat? by NYT Cooking (Video): Follows the everyday life of a New York City taxi driver and the role local restaurants play as community centres for him.
- Climate Connections: A Warming Planet, Pathogens, and Diseases by Zoya Teirstein (Article): The influence of the climate emergency on the proliferation and spread of new diseases and pathogens.
- Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette (Album): An classic Canadian alt-rock album that needs no introduction. Ever since I first heard these songs as a teenager, I continue to come back to this album, as I have in the past couple weeks. I don't care if "Ironic" is devoid of irony, because something about this album feels like home and I adore it. Personal highlights from the album include songs like: Ironic, All I Really Want, Hand in My Pocket, and You Oughta Know.
