Weekly Report: August 26th - September 1st 2024
The Week in Summary:
- Stage 4 water restrictions are back in effect as the City of Calgary makes the decision to continue repair work on the South Bearspaw water main. Our household is back to rigid water conservation efforts and we'll do our best to maintain that over the next few weeks. We're doing our part!
- On Friday, Krystal and Alexis came over in the morning and we prepared some pizza dough (which needed like 12 hours). We went down to Fish Creek Provincial Park for a walk to explore the area between Bebo Grove and Votier's Flats (and went to a nearby bakery for a late lunch). You can read more about that walk here - but importantly, we seen a garter snake! Later that night, Krystal and I finished the pizza just in time for Taylor to get home from a long day of work (we also drink a bottle of fantastic Italian red wine).
- On Saturday, my buddy Dylan had a layover in Calgary. We had Class Clown for lunch. Afterwards, we went on a walk along the Bow River, towards Inglewood, then back through the downtown. I consider myself an ambassador to how based Calgary is (minus the current water concerns). After he went back to the airport, I walked down to the festival grounds at Prince's Island Park to visit Taylor and check things out. I went to bed with a lot of muscle pain in my legs and feet from spending much of the day walking around the neighbourhood. Ouch!
- I walked with Telus Spark in the Calgary Pride Parade on Sunday. There seemed like there was so many more attendees compared to last year, but maybe that's a bias. After reaching the festival grounds, Katelyn, Angela, Megan, Alexis, Krystal, and I got lunch from the food trucks and checked out the local vendors. It was oppressively hot, but Krystal, Alexis, and I managed to make it down to the Porch on 17th Ave for cocktails and an early dinner. I am really grateful to have so many lovely and kind friends to celebrate Pride with this year. <3
- On a more a personal note, and not to belabour this upcoming sentimentality, but the admiration I have for Taylor is immeasurable. Throughout the year, they have been working so damn hard to serve our city's queer community. Everything they do, they do with love for our neighbourhood. I love Taylor so much and I am really REALLY fucking excited to spend more time with them as things begin to relax going into the autumn. knocks on wood

- Havasupai Uranium Mine Protest by Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan (Video): Really interesting and nuanced video about the resilience of Havasupai, their struggle against colonial extractivism on their ancestral lands, and the broader legacy of nuclear colonialism across the American Southwest.
- HOT TO GO! by Chappell Roan (Song): Fantastic pop song that was an absolute banger during the Pride parade! Now I need to learn the dance.
- How B.C. United’s collapse could reshape the election by CBC News - The National (Video): A good overview of the major political shift that occurred in British Columbia this week, as well as the potential consequences of the B.C. United's collapse for the upcoming provincial election.
