Weekly Report: February 26th - March 3rd 2024

The Week in Summary:

  • Work was fairly slow, but brief, as I had my wisdom teeth extraction surgery rescheduled to Thursday (instead of March 19th). I was fairly nervous about it, but the surgery went fine with few complications (a chipped tooth being one). When I awoke in the recovery room, I talked aloud to myself until my partner requested an Uber home for us. Once home, I got set up with my postoperative care routine and I tried to keep myself occupied. From that Thursday morning til Sunday, my partner and I worked towards my recovery. I've been mostly having liquid foods, alternating between T3s and ibuprofen, using frozen peas and warm moist cloth over my jaw, and trying to fight off anxiety and get some rest. It’s been really challenging to find some peace due to the inflammation and muscle stiffness around the jaw causing so much pain, but we are hoping things turn around next week. I know that I would not have been able to make this recovery remotely comfortable without my love looking out for me.
  • Due to some of the challenges with reading due to recovery, I listened to an audiobook over the long weekend called Worn: A People’s History of Clothing by Sofi Thanhauser. I have never been someone to pay attention to the materials and processes involved in making clothing, besides a rudimentary knowledge of sweatshop labour and the excess of water used in producing denim, but this book had me thinking about ideas like mending my own clothing, looking at sustainable local fabrics, and examining what I already own.
  • On Friday, I attended a Bandcamp listening party for SKYLLUMINA by Ruth Goller, a newly released experimental jazz album from International Anthem Recording. It was a very haunting, but still blissful session.
  • Calgary had a few snowstorms from Thursday to Saturday, bringing some much needed precipitation to our drought-stricken province. Apparently Saturday was the snowiest March day in decades.

Recommendations:

  • Worn: A People’s History of Clothing by Sofi Thanhauser (Book): An excellent exploration of textiles and fabric, specifically how the forces of industrialization, environmental degradation, and colonial exploitation transformed the global garment industry.
  • V by Unknown Mortal Orchestra (Album): Psychedelic-pop with a relaxed tropical vibe.
