Weekly Report: July 7th - July 13th 2025
The Week in Summary:
- Onward work continued, with a couple days in the office and a couple days at home. Relative to last summer, remote work is easier, but still presents challenges for my restlessness (a morning bike ride is essential). Outside of work, I went for a breakfast with Taylor at Red's Diner in Kensington, played too much Balatro, went to the cafe/played chess with Rand, made a vegan kale sausage soup, and read about medieval/early-modern Indian history (11th century to mid-18th century).
- Additionally, I had the pleasure of one of my oldest friends, Avery, visiting in the city for a few days. On Tuesday, just to two of us went to Kensington Pub for dinner. On Thursday, Avery joined Krystal, Alexis, Taylor, and I for a favourite of his: Japanese Village. I had the teriyaki salmon, which was fantastic, but even better was Avery paying for Taylor and I's meal (which we greatly appreciated). I always appreciate his company!
- As for the weekend, it was a lot of fun, but with enough time to decompress too. For Saturday, after spending the morning playing Balatro and reading at Butterblock, Taylor and I joined our lovely friends at Drag Me to Cowboys to enjoy some good ol' fashioned drag performances and Kim Petra's concert. Thanks to Taylor, we had a phenomenal VIP section to appreciate. On Sunday, whilst Taylor was working at the office, I spent the day cleaning the condo, drinking a bunch of tea, and reading the last of Richard M. Eaton's India in the Persianate Age, 1000–1765.
- With Sunday, our annual Calgary Stampede is at its conclusion. Despite how ridiculous cowboy machismo and stewardship of Wild West mythology is, I do appreciate the vibrancy of Calgary Stampede carnival-esque festivities. For over a week, our streets are bustling with raucous nightlife - something I have always enjoyed about urban life. If only drunk office workers in cowboy hats could get the fuck off the e-scooters, we'd be golden.
