Weekly Report: March 3rd - March 9th 2025

The Week in Summary:

  • Let's start with the elephant in the room. Canada and the United States finally entered into a trade war this week. With the signing of the Canada–United States Free Trade Agreement in 1988, continental free trade has defined US-Canadian economic relations and it has mostly been a boon for both nations. The American-led economic attack on our nation has effectively ended that arrangement with our federal and provincial governments standing strong in the face of this chaos. It is rare that both Trudeau and Ford command my respect, yet here we are. But more remarkable is the surge of Canadian patriotism (with complementary anti-Americanism on the side) shifting the political landscape recently. I said it before, and I will say it again: the country is changing. Mark Carney has been chosen as the new Liberal leader and a federal election is coming up soon.
  • Whilst Taylor spent the week preparing for and helping co-host a national conference, I had a fairly quiet week all things considered. I started bullet journaling to better manage my time, got back into a reading routine, and got myself a pomodoro timer. In general, I am continuing to introduce gradual changes to my life to put it in a better direction.
  • On Saturday, after reading at Oolong Tea House in the morning and buying a new book at Pages Kensington, I walked along the Bow River to City Hall/Central Public Library. In the afternoon, I went to the nearby City Building Design Lab to participate in a community event hosted by Calgary's Future called "What's Next for Housing?" and it was really refreshing to hear from local advocates on how to tackle the housing crisis. I am hoping to get more involved in local issues, rather than succumbing to the looming party partisanship expected in the next federal election.
  • I spent most of Sunday puttering around the condo listening to my vinyl records and reading, but in the evening, Taylor, Katelyn, Ang, Krystal, and I went to BiRA 17 Craft Indian Bistro for dinner and hung out chatting afterwards.
  • Also, I do want to recognize that I received my Portuguese Flannel in the mail and I adore it so much. I even sent a thank-you email!
