Weekly Report: May 12th - May 18th 2025

The Week in Summary:

  • The work was fairly normal, but after work on Monday, Alexis and I turned into the Calgary Curling Club on impulse due to the annual Big Book Sale (we seen the sign for it on Memorial)! I volunteered for this event years ago with Taylor and we had a lot of fun. I ended up picking up Porter Fox's recent book Category Five: Superstorms and the Warming Oceans That Feed Them for only $4! I am sure we would have found even better deals if we went on the first day. Later in the week, Rand and I went to Golden Bell for peanut sate noodle soup and played Chess (including a mind-bending variant of the game that I promptly lost).
  • During the May Long Weekend, I played a bunch of Subnautica, finished reading James Bradley's Deep Water: The World in the Ocean, biked along the Bow River (at times in the wonderful spring rain) with Taylor, tried out a new cafe in Crescent Heights called Sought x Found with Alexis and Taylor, and invited the usual suspects over for a Sunday afternoon of charcuterie and crafting!
  • On Friday, after noticing technical difficulties with the turntable I bought a month ago, I returned it for a refund due to it being defective. I replaced it with a Rega Planar 1 and a Rega pre-amp - both of which have been working splendidly so far! I absolutely adore my vinyl records and it brings me a lot of joy to have a home filled with music!
  • On Saturday, afternoon going to Sought x Found, Alexis was very kind and drove Taylor and I over the Bathtub Bikes in NE Calgary to pick up a bike for Taylor. We went out biking a few times now already! I am now going to turn it over to them to share!
For well over a decade, I have not been able to ride a bike due to a medical issue that emerged as a teenager. A combination of taking the right meds and a lot of work to get over the event that ended my ability to bike means that this weekend I was able to go for a bike ride, with my very own bike, for the first time in years. This has been a revelation on a number of fronts. Of course, it's a joy to be able to do something I loved again - but further - it feels like I've regrown a limb I hadn't known I'd lost. Needless to say, I am incredibly proud of my beautiful $100 pre-loved mountain bike. I've covered it in stickers, and in doing so, feel like I've reclaimed something. I'm extremely grateful to Chance for taking me out for the first of many bike rides! - Taylor S.
