Weekly Report: October 14th - October 20th 2024

The Week in Summary:

  • On Thanksgiving Monday, Taylor and I joined our family to play Twilight Imperium, an infamously long grand strategy space game, for the day. Taylor won and all was well (I did, in fact, attack them out of love). Afterwards we had some pizza for dinner.
  • The work week was full of novelty with lots of offsite and special programming done, which I quite enjoy as it shakes up routine a bit. In regards to the latter, I got to participate in a fungus-themed Indigenous Science Night at the science centre and it was really cool!
  • DayZ released a new DLC called Frostline that includes a new map called Sakhal. I have been playing it a lot lately, but holy shit, I am really struggling with it compared to the base game. There is a lot of balancing of heat, food, and water as you traverse a fairly desolate Far Eastern archipelago. Other than that, I tried out Old World again and started a campaign of Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon (which Dylan got me as an early birthday gift).
  • Another week of maintaining a daily gratitude journal and sticking to my running routine. Both of them are getting easier and that makes life feel more manageable most days. I think the key here is to not get carried away with self-improvement, but to work towards doing it gradually. This might sound obvious, but I consider it a good reminder.
  • For the weekend, I stayed at home and got some downtime. I mostly just hung out reading, listening to music, and playing some games. As it gets colder out, I am going to have to find novel ways to get outdoors more, especially because I do not like being sedentary too long.

Recommendations:

  • Why hack the Calgary Public Library? by CBC News Alberta (Video): A video detailing the recent cyberattack on Calgary Public Library, specifically why these cyberattacks happen and how public libraries have responded in the past.
  • Imaginal Disk by Magdalena Bay (Album): Just fantastic groovy synthpop to move your body to and get entranced by - imagine ABBA by more futuristic and a bit of a prog-rock vibe. Personal highlights from the album include songs like: Watching T.V., Image, Tunnel Vision, and Cry for Me.
  • Meet the hoverfly, the lesser-known insect crucial to Alberta's farming industry by CBC News Alberta (Video): An introduction to our friend, the hoverfly, and how they contribute to our food systems as pollinators. I seen a few of these over the summer.
