Weekly Report: September 29th - October 5th 2025

The Week in Summary:

  • On Monday, the science centre held educational programming for Truth and Reconciliation Day (as we are closed for the day itself). The following day, Taylor, Alexis, and I participated in the Pokaiks Reconciliation Walk from the Peace Bridge to Contemporary Calgary.
  • In the past few days of the work week, our staff spent time preparing for the looming provincial teachers' strike and our science centre's pivot towards providing childcare placements. There has been a lot of anxiety in our household regarding the strike and its broader impacts, but we are keeping positive and supporting the teachers for as long as they need us for. Our family will always stand with organized labour! I did send a letter to the Premier and Education Minister, which is not often how I voice dissent, but I figured it was worth it just to blow off some steam.
  • For Saturday, Taylor and I joined their team to enjoy Cirque De Soleil's recent performance, Echo, down at the Stampede Grounds. It was a lot of fun to watch, but I struggled to identify the central theme. I suppose the spectacle is worth it regardless! Afterwards, we biked to Kensington Pub for lunch (Haddock and Chips for Taylor, and Bangers and Mash for myself) and hung around the bookstore for a few hours before coming home.
  • The following day, I cleaned the condo and read for a couple hours before attending the teachers' public education rally in the afternoon. The rally was enormous and filled me with so much community pride that I have trouble articulating it. SOLITARY FOREVER! Afterwards, I came home to join Taylor and the family for Greek pizza and great conversation. Taylor's uncle is visiting from Australia and it was wonderful to spend time together tonight!
  • This week, I read Paul Kingsnorth and Dougald Hine's brief pamphlet, Uncivilisation: The Dark Mountain Manifesto. Additionally, I read Laura Bates' recently released The New Age of Sexism: How AI and Emerging Technologies Are Reinventing Misogyny. My god, if you want to be disgusted by the the misogynistic use of digital technologies, this book will make your stomach churn.
  • Lastly, I played Europa Universalis IV over the week and started earnestly figuring out this bloated historical grand strategy game (finally). It is very dated, but I did get past the messy UI and old graphics quicker than I thought.
